NO TOBACCO DAY

‘World No Tobacco Day’ is observed on 31 May every year to sensitise people about the health implications of smoking and drug use and to adopt a healthy life style.

This year the commemoration was jointly hosted by the Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Teynampet, Chennai and State Tobacco Control Cell. The Organisers together with the Government of Tamil Nadu invited more than 200 Schools from the districts of Chennai, Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur to participate in the Awareness Camp on the harmful effects of tobacco and its products.

Thiru Ma. Subramaniam, Minister of Health inaugurated the Camp and stressed on the need to make Tamil Nadu ‘A Tobacco Free State’. He said tobacco use is among the leading cause of fatality that include deaths due to oral and lung cancer. He added that the addiction should be nipped in the bud to curb the spike in cases of tobacco related deaths.

A Special Felicitation Ceremony was organized by the Department to recognise the efforts made by Educational Institutions to inculcate healthy habits among students  and provide guidance to them against falling prey to substance abuse under any circumstance.

A Certificate of Honour - Tobacco Free Educational Institution (ToFEI) with a  three year validity was presented to schools based on a Set of Criteria declared by the Union Government and State Tobacco Control Cell in ensuring that a school and it peripheries are ‘Tobacco Free Zones’.

Representatives from the Schools were presented the Certificates for their work towards ‘Safe Schools’. Ms. Uma S, Supervisory in Charge and Ms. Kamalavalli represented our School at the Formal Felicitation Ceremony and received the Certificate at the hands of the Senior Officials.

The recognition comes with a huge responsibility of passing on the right information to the younger generation and also adhering to No Tobacco Status within hundred meters radius of the school.
