ONE DAY TRAINING PROGRAMME ON ‘COMPOSTING TECHNOLOGY’
AT TAMILNADU AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY INFORMATION AND TRAINING CENTRE, GUINDY
A One day workshop on Composting Technology was organised by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Information and Training Centre, Guindy on 21st August, 2019 for school students.
The session was organised by Dr. A. Sadasakthi, Professor and Dean and Dr. K.R. Vijayalatha, Associate Professor and facilitated by Dr. S. Suganya, Ph.D, Assistant Professor, Soil Sciences and Agricultural Chemistry, Faculty of TNAU, Guindy, Chennai.
25 students of Std XII ‘B’ and 3 Teachers attended the programme to understand the need of composting and various techniques of Composting like, Natural Composting, Vermi Composting, Coconut Pith and Microbial Consortium. The Session conveyed to the students how waste generated needs to be converted into ‘gold’ and the single solution is simple composting in our backyards and gardens.
The facilitator thrust on the benefits of composting which she said could largely increase soil quality, fertility and productivity. Indigenous methods of composting designed by Scientists from Bengaluru, Indore and Coimbatore were sampled for the advantage of the urban population. The methods depicted how simple ways of waste management can environmentally and economically be beneficial.
The 25 compost crusaders got the opportunity to witness the Resource Person build prepare a 'compost pit' using common household goods like a flex, wooden frames, old buckets et al. A Hands- On- Experience in preparing the raw material for composting helped the students understand the composting procedure. The greatest revelation of the session was handling the earth worms and observe the ‘friends of the farmer’ work actively in the soil.
Further, the facilitator highlighted the difficulties and shortcomings of the different composting technologies. She also stressed that composting is a 'fast catching up' entrepreneurial idea in the urban areas. The participants had a perfect blend of theory and practical during the daylong session.
