The 78th Independence Day and the immense sacrifices and unwavering courage of the Indian freedom fighters were celebrated on 15 August, 2024 by the DAVites of Velachery, Chennai.

Mrs Rajalakshmi Radhakrishnan, National Vice President, Hindustan Scouts and Guides hoisted the National Flag accompanied by the Principal, Ms Sujatha M., a grandparent, a parent, a teacher and a student.

The Cultural Programme was a potpourri of performing arts highlighting the patriotic fervour amongst the students.

Students of UKG and Std IV mesmerised the viewers with their melodious voices to the songs ‘Namadhu Kodi’ and ‘Bharata Desam Vazhgave’ pontificating the Tricolor.

The Classical Dance by the most elegant dancers of Std XI and XII narrated the ancient stories of courage and freedom through ‘Jayatu Jayatu Bharatam’.

The music divas of Std XI and XII took the audience through a musical journey in the mash up of the most popular Patriotic Songs thus, honouring the very basic spirit of independence.

A Bengali patriotic song - ‘Dhano Dhano Pushpo Bora’ was presented by the Students of Std VIII to X to bring to the fore the essence of the C.B.S.E. initiative, ‘Ek Bharat Sreshta Bharat’. The native speakers of Tamil and Bengali came together to exchange notes on the cultural legacy and learn a Beautiful Bengali Composition.

Two eloquent speakers, Siddharth Singh of Std VII and Thrinayani P. of Std XII presented two thought provoking speeches that motivated the spectators to give a serious thought about the hard earned Independence and how it should be valued in the modern era.

A poignant literary piece paying tribute to one of the most courageous women freedom fighters - Velu Nachiyar (Veeramangai) was presented by the students of Std IV.

The cynosure of the day’s programme was the power- packed patriotic composition by the girls of Std XI and XII who danced their way into the hearts of the audience by the portrayal of ‘Nari Shakti’ and the pivotal presence of women in the Armed Forces, Natural Disasters and their paramount contribution to the Nation's growth and development in all sectors.

Vishal of grade XI presented a laser light display on the Outline Map of India to hint at the small steps students are taking towards ‘Viksit Bharat’.

The Shaheed Smarak or the Seven Martyrs statue in Patna, is an enduring symbol of courage and commitment that fueled the Indian independence movement and commemorates the event that transpired 82 years ago on August 11, 1942, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s call for ‘Quit India’. A tableau replicating the Shaheed Smarak was presented by the boys of Std XII exemplifying the role of students in the national movement.

The Chief Guest, Mrs. Rajalakshmi Radhakrishnan emphasised on the need for inculcating the spirit of social and national service to make our nation a Superpower by 2047. She reiterated that like the Scouts and Guides, every citizen should be governed by the four Pillars of, ‘Character Building, Citizenship, Outdoor Skills and Leadership’. She quoted several anecdotes, taught the Scout salute and administered the Oath for all the students to ‘Cherish and Respect’ the Fundamental Rights and Duties of an Indian Citizen.

The Principal, Mrs. Sujatha M. motivated the students to adhere to the School Mission Statement that makes a call for ‘Love for the Motherland and Commitment to the Larger Good of mankind’. She added that the country might be free from the clutches of the foreign invaders but, the youth have fallen prey to addictions which will curb the huge strides the nation needs to make. She urged the students to work with a burning desire to excel in their lives and make the nation proud.

The festivity concluded with the renewal of our pledge to build ‘Our India’ into a progressive, inclusive, and just nation that stands tall on the global stage while holding fast to its rich culture and heritage.
