SALLY RIDE EARTHKAM PROJECT CONDUCTED BY SPACE - INDIA

Sally Ride EarthKAM, a NASA  sponsored Education Outreach Programme  was hosted at D.A.V. Public School, Velachery on 24th September, 2019 under the expert guidance of  SPACE INDIA.

Sally Ride EarthKAM (Earth Knowledge Acquired by Middle School Students) is an Educational Programme that enables students to capture the imagery of specific geographic areas of  the Earth from a digital camera on board the International Space Station (ISS) via a web interface.

The September Mission 2019 was run for schools across Chennai between September 24 and 26, 2019. 40 students of Std. VIII participated in the three hour programme that was held in our school premises.

Mrs. Minoo Aggarwal, the host Principal inaugurated the programme and encouraged students to engage actively in such activities and integrate these acquired skills in their academics too.

Mr. Ranjith, Mr. Krishna and Mr. Neeraj Ladia, the facilitators from SPACE demonstrated to the “Space Station Explorers” how to select and take stunning, high quality images of Earth from a digital camera mounted at a "Nadir pointing window in the Destiny Lab" of the International Space Station (ISS).

In the first session of the programme, Mr. Ranjith briefed about Sally Ride EarthKAM, ISS and the Web Interface and explained about the International Educational Program of NASA to the eager participants.

In the second session students were provided the Username and Password which helped them locate their regions of interest through web interface and control the digital camera on board the ISS using the given username and password.

The exciting activity of capturing Earth images of the specified locations on Earth like Great Wall of China, or Bahamas left the students spellbound  and thrilled them beyond any measure.

The students were also educated on how EarthKAM would enable  better concept strengthening in classrooms especially to study the topography and geographical locations of the places included in their Social Science Lessons.

The sessions were very informative and were thoroughly enjoyed by the students. Special Certificates of recognition were given away to the student participants.
